The venom of Acanthophis antarcticus (Common Death Adder) is a highly potent cocktail of neurotoxins. Unlike many other elapids, its venom contains predominantly post-synaptic neurotoxins (acanthopins) that bind with high affinity to the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) at the neuromuscular junction, causing flaccid paralysis. It also contains significant anticoagulant activity.
