Description & Applications
Product Description
The venom of Acanthophis antarcticus (Common Death Adder) is a highly potent cocktail of neurotoxins. Unlike many other elapids, its venom contains predominantly post-synaptic neurotoxins (acanthopins) that bind with high affinity to the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) at the neuromuscular junction, causing flaccid paralysis. It also contains significant anticoagulant activity.
Research Applications
- Neuromuscular Pharmacology: Ideal for studying post-synaptic blockade and nAChR kinetics.
- Toxinology: Source of acanthopins (short-chain neurotoxins) structurally related to erabutoxins.
- Coagulation: Investigation of venom-induced coagulopathy mechanisms.
Quality Control
Each batch is analyzed by SDS-PAGE and HPLC to ensure consistent protein profiles. Endotoxin levels are monitored to support cell-based assays.
