Description & Applications
Product Description
The venom of the Gila Monster (Heloderma suspectum), one of the few venomous lizards in the world, is a treasure trove of bioactive peptides with remarkable metabolic effects. Unlike snake venoms which are primarily used for predation and defense, Gila Monster venom contains components that have revolutionized the treatment of metabolic diseases.
The most significant component is Exendin-4, a 39-amino acid peptide.
- Mechanism: Exendin-4 is a potent agonist of the Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor in mammals.
- Stability: Unlike human GLP-1, which is rapidly degraded by the enzyme DPP-4, Exendin-4 is resistant to degradation, giving it a much longer half-life and duration of action.
- Effects: It stimulates insulin secretion in a glucose-dependent manner, suppresses glucagon secretion, slows gastric emptying, and promotes satiety.
This discovery led to the development of Exenatide, the first in a new class of diabetes medications (GLP-1 mimetics). Our venom is collected from healthy, captive-bred specimens without harm to the animals.
Research Applications
-
Diabetes & Metabolic Disease:
- Type 2 Diabetes: Continued research into GLP-1 receptor agonists for glycemic control.
- Obesity: Investigation of the appetite-suppressing effects of venom peptides for weight management drugs.
- Beta-Cell Preservation: Study of Exendin-4’s ability to promote the proliferation and survival of pancreatic beta-cells.
-
Neuroprotection:
- Emerging research suggests GLP-1 agonists may have neuroprotective effects in neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease.
- Investigation of the transport of venom peptides across the blood-brain barrier.
-
Peptide Chemistry:
- Structure-activity relationship (SAR) studies to design novel analogues with improved potency or stability.
